Every May, America's Social Security office publishes the year's most popular baby names. Olivia and Liam topped the list again for 2025. The name that climbed fastest was Kasai: it jumped 1,108 places to number 639, entering the top 1,000 for the first time. The announcement said Kasai means “fire” in Japanese and Swahili.
Since then, a lot of parents have typed “Kasai Swahili meaning” into Google. So we looked into it.
So what does Kasai mean?
Baby-name sites agree on the Japanese meaning: Kasai can be written with characters that mean fire. That's where the meaning comes from.
In Swahili, the everyday word for fire is moto (MO-to). We couldn't find kasai as a Swahili word for fire, or as a common Swahili name.
Kasai does have a real African home, though: the Kasai River, one of the biggest rivers of Central Africa, and the Kasai region it runs through in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That's a lovely story for a name. It just isn't a Swahili one.
None of this makes Kasai a bad choice. It's a beautiful name. It's simply worth knowing where it comes from, especially if you chose it for its Swahili meaning.
Names often called Swahili online: the facts
Kasai isn't the only one. Here are names that baby-name lists often call Swahili, and what we found. The origin marks show whether a name is from Swahili's own African (Bantu) roots or came into Swahili from Arabic.

|---|---|---|
| Kasai | fire | Not the Swahili word for fire (that's moto). Fire in Japanese; also a river and region in DR Congo. |
| Nia | purpose | Yes, a real Swahili word and name: purpose, intention. Arabic-origin |
| Zuri | beautiful | Yes: beautiful, from the same root as nzuri (good, fine). Bantu-Swahili |

| Eshe | life | Not the Swahili word for life: that's uhai or maisha, and “live” is ishi. |
If you love Kasai: Swahili names full of light

| Name | Means | Say it | Origin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jua | sun | JOO-ah | Bantu-Swahili |
| Nyota | star | NYO-tah | Bantu-Swahili |
| Nuru | light | NOO-roo | Arabic-origin |
| Kito | precious one, jewel | KEE-to | Bantu-Swahili |
| Dunia | world | doo-NEE-ah | Arabic-origin |
Every Swahili vowel is its own sound (a, e, i, o, u), and the stress falls on the second-to-last syllable, shown in capitals.
How to tell if a name is really Swahili
- Look for the everyday word. Many Swahili names are ordinary words: Nyota is what everyone calls a star. If the “meaning” isn't a word Swahili speakers use, be curious.
- Ask where it came from. Lots of loved Swahili names came from Arabic centuries ago, like Amani and Imani. They're still truly Swahili names; it's just good to know their story.
- Ask two sources, ideally a Swahili speaker. Baby-name sites often copy each other, so one mistake spreads fast.
